When you first suspect that something is wrong with your engine, you’ll want to make it a top priority to get to the shop. By acting quickly, you’ll have the best chance to resolve the problem before it gets worse and becomes more expensive to repair. At Cruz-N-Carz, our local mechanics are highly experienced with engine repair in the greater Pearland, TX area.

Warning Signs of Engine Trouble

One of the more common signs of trouble is that the check engine light flashes on. When this warning light illuminates, it doesn’t necessarily mean that your engine is on the cusp of complete disaster. Still, you should promptly visit the shop for diagnostics so that the issue can be identified and addressed before it escalates. Common check engine light triggers include problems with catalytic converters, ignition coils, MAF sensors, and oxygen sensors.

Another cause for concern is that there are abnormal sounds emerging from your engine. You should definitely have the mechanic take a look if you notice knocking/tapping noises, which could be caused by issues such as a lean air fuel mix, inadequate lubrication, and failing rod bearings. Grinding noise can be caused by problems with water pumps and power steering pumps. Squealing sounds commonly arise due to serpentine belt issues.

You should also get to the shop if you notice a significant loss of power. In older cars that have a ton of miles, it’s not necessarily a major concern if a little power has slowly been lost over a long period of time. But if your car has suddenly lost a substantial amount of power, then you could have a serious issue such as piston or head gasket trouble.

You could also have an engine problem if your car is emitting discolored/excessive exhaust smoke. Black smoke is a sign of too much fuel being burned. Blue-tinted smoke is symptomatic of an oil leak. White smoke is an indication of an internal coolant leak, and could mean that you have a blown head gasket.
