As you drive to work and back and each day, it might seem like your commute is entirely predictable. But the reality is that you never know when you might cross paths with a reckless driver. When a safety hazard does suddenly emerge, it’s crucial that you can trust your brakes to work just like they should. So if you notice any indication of brake trouble, you’ll want to have the mechanic conduct an inspection. At Cruz-N-Cars, our local mechanics are experts at brake repair in the greater Pearland, TX area.

Common Symptoms of Brake Failure

An illuminated ABS (anti-lock braking system) warning light means that you should get to the shop for diagnostics. This light may come on because of issues including a failing ABS module, faulty wheel speed sensors, and low brake fluid. In the event that your vehicle is leaking brake fluid, you’ve got a serious safety hazard that should be addressed ASAP.

Issues with brake pads often cause signs of brake problems. A high-pitched squealing sound is an indication that the little piece of metal attached to your brake pads has started rubbing against the rotor. Oftentimes, brake pads need to be changed out by 30,000 miles. However, the frequency with which you need new brake pads will also have a lot to do with how hard you are on your brakes during your day-to-day driving routine.

Another red flag is that there are significant vibrations. You may notice vibrations because areas of the rotor’s surface have degraded, causing the pad surface to unevenly transfer to the rotor. This problem often requires rotors to be smoothed out to ensure they have even surfaces.

A particularly dangerous symptom of brake trouble is that your car drifts off to one side when the brakes are engaged. This could happen if corrosion causes a caliper to stick. Because this puts you and other driver’s in immediate danger, the vehicle should not be operated. Rather, it should be towed to the shop for repairs before it is driven again.
